Preotecting grammar on an USB flash drive
As long as the flash drive is connected when I boot the machine, it is correctly recognized as da0, I can mount da0s1, read and write to and from it -- everything's fine. But at that point, if I (unmount and) disconnect the flash drive, I can't get it recognized again. I had a lot of problems with flash drives too.

what's the story with usb flash drives which suddenly need ...
You'll need at least as much physical memory as the size of the flash drive, but the cost factor isn't all that prohibitive. As for dependability, zero moving parts (flash drive) should always be more dependable than a hard drive. As for vibration, most of the USB flash drives I've used hold pretty tight once

Cheap USB flash drives?
The question (Clint already answered) was what sort of data, not how much. I agree that USB flash drives resemble floppy drives. But for those of us who don't burn or copy CDs/DVDs, flash drives will make CD/DVD burners obsolete. Most users are still struggling with the process of copying files to a CD,

But there are lots of computers, especially laptops, that don't supply the maximum power permitted to USB ports, and there are lots of USB flash drives that won't work with the minimum allowed power. Question USB Flash Drive Life
There are adaptors to do that with laptop drives. But it still isn't the easiest thing to do. Maybe someone else will be able to help you with the non-booting issue. Booting into safe mode probably won't allow you to copy to the USB flash drive, just like DOS - no drivers.
